The 1st Annual Convention of Technologies of the Future/Technologie di Frontiera (TDF) will be held in the medieval castle of Moncrivello, Italy, on 1 April 2006. The one-day convention programme starts at to 9.30, and will feature presentations on a diverse range of topics, from space engineering through economic analysis to cultural impact and artistic expression. The scheduled activities finish up at 22.00 pm. Convention chairperson Luisa Spairani and president of TDF, Adriano Autino
, have issued a general invitation for people interested in space.
Speakers include Jim Benson of SpaceDev, who will be presenting the paper "Making Space Happen" and Rick Tumlinson of the Space Frontier Foundation, who will be presenting the paper, "All of the Above: Opening the Space Frontier." Papers will be presented in English, with a translation in Italian upon request.
TDF started as a webzine in 1997, as a meeting place for enthusiasts of space; it now has a 10-person editorial staff. As it developed, Autino and his colleagues decided a convention would be an excellent way to showcase their work and the work of others in the industry.
Autino says this convention will bring together like-minded people who are interested in space and excited about its future. The lectures will include aeronautics, economics, as well as the culture of space: TDF recognizes that space is not limited to scientists. "We want to inspire artists with our vision, and to be ourselves inspired by their art."
The castle is in the center of the picturesque town of Moncrivello, midway between Torino and Milan. Larger towns in the area are Santhià and Cigliano, which operates a bus service to Moncrivello. The nearest airports are Torino Caselle (approximately 40 kms) and Milano Malpensa (approximately 70 kms), the intercontinental hub for North Italy. Attendees are advised to rent a car. Autino recommends that attendees spend the night before in nearby Cigliano, where convention staff can provide a pickup service to the castle.
