The Future Starts Here

The boundary between the old and the new is usually a little blurred; there is often a period of overlap coloring the transition. The start of the jet age would be such an example in the aerospace business, with both Spitfires and Meteors flying in the same skies. Nevertheless, there are sometimes identifiable events in history when even an observer at the time can see that a massive change has taken place, and that one era is closing and a new one has begun.

Monday June 21st, in Mojave, California was one such turning point. We have entered a new phase of the space flight business, and a new future beckons, due to the efforts of a few inspired entrepreneurs and their small dedicated teams. Before moving on, we should pause to record and celebrate just how major a change has been achieved, courtesy of Messrs Rutan, Allen, Benson and Diamandis.

First of all, we should note that the SpaceShipOne flight rekindled the interest of ordinary folks in space flight. Around 20,000 people turned up before sunrise in a hick town in the middle of nowhere, bringing their children and animals, to see the spectacle. Guys were selling binoculars and tee shirts. And it was a spectacle, superbly orchestrated to showcase space flight as entertainment.

One cannot help making comparisons with the May 5, 1961 suborbital flight of Alan Shepard, even though we must acknowledge that his historic flight took place during the Cold War era. The whole event in Mojave took place right before the eyes of the crowd, from takeoff to space flight to safe landing, all within an hour and a half. It was an extraordinary performance. Alan Shepard needed the entire US Navy's Atlantic Fleet to find him on reentry; Mike Melvill just landed right in front of the crowd.

Look at some other contrasts. Burt Rutan's equivalent of the Mercury control room was a mobile trailer. Back in 1961, the fuel was kerosene with liquid oxygen as oxidizer, which meant that nobody except the astronaut was within miles of the vehicle during the countdown to launch, unless they were in concrete bunkers. Melvill's spacecraft has a new hybrid rocket engine that uses rubber and laughing gas, a combination of fuel and oxidizer so inherently safe that his White Knight mother plane taxied right by the crowd on his way to take off, with SpaceShipOne suspended beneath.

The spacecraft itself was dramatically different in construction from those of the sixties. Composites have replaced exotic metals. The crew cabin of SpaceShipOne seems to consist of more holes than structure to ensure a good view for crew and passengers, and the pilot can even stick his hand out to wave to the crowd on passing by to take off. Mercury, by comparison, was a sealed capsule with very little external visibility, and no room for the astronaut to move. This new strange-looking bird with its spindly legs is a totally new kind of spacecraft, even though it looks an unlikely harbinger of great change. It is reusable and can take off again for space with a turnaround of a few days. All of the Mercury capsules were used once and then ended up in museums like the Smithsonian.

Perhaps even more dramatic to note is the comparison between the image represented by Shepard in his shiny full pressure spacesuit (which almost defined the term "astronaut"), and an almost casual Melvill in his regular flight suit overalls. Ten minutes after returning from space, Melvill could jubilantly climb on his craft and be towed in front of the crowd. It really makes you think.

There are contrasts, too, between the old US Air Force-managed Cape Canaveral and the new civilian Mojave Spaceport. This was an inland launch from a commercial airport and everything took place in the skies above the spaceport. The essential image of Canaveral is its row of gantries, lining the ocean; Mojave has no gantries. It has no high-energy LOX and propellant storage bunkers, or blockhouses, either. Facilities for the public at Mojave on June 21st were a bit basic, and will need to improve at all spaceports, because this new era of space flight will succeed or fail depending on the way the public perceives the experience. There will be some exciting changes ahead at spaceports as the new industry develops.

Of course, the main contrast, and the key to all the other changes, is the source of funds. SpaceShipOne flew into space without recourse to government funds. So, this new era depends on the development of the new business of public space travel, and relies upon projections of numbers of the public who want to be space tourists. If the surveys are correct, then up to 15,000 space tourists per year want to take a suborbital flight at up to $100,000 per flight. Entering the field at Mojave on June 21st, passed a solitary Stars and Stripes flag stirring in the early breeze, illuminated dramatically as the desert sun began to rise over the distant mountain range, and it underlined that what was about to happen was a truly American endeavor. The new space era reverts to essential American values: having fun, taking risks, pushing frontiers, and trying to make a buck.

Burt Rutan signaled his intentions clearly enough on December 17th, 2003, the centenary of the Wright Brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk, when he sent Spaceship One to 68,000 feet at Mach 1.2. Now he and his team have achieved the first civilian designed, built, financed, and piloted trip into space. He intends to continue to change the aerospace world, and has been talking about a wild ride. He is headed to orbit and beyond. And he will do it taking us with him, which is the biggest, and most enabling, change of all. Twenty thousand people, who in the early dawn saw SpaceShipOne going like a bat out of hell into space in the blue skies above Mojave, not only experienced an inspiring historical moment, but observed the true beginning of the new space era, a turning point for mankind.

SpaceShipOne: A Personal View

21st June 2004: For the rest of my life I can say I was there in Mojave on that great day when the Burt Rutan designed SpaceShipOne made the first privately funded human space flight, and the name of Mike Melville joined the list of spacefarers, a list that will now grow rapidly as the space tourism industry develops.

The experience was shared with VIPs, two hundred representatives of the world's media (including me), and twenty thousand members of the public. The two days of June 20th and 21st were totally unforgettable. After take-off the long wait while White Knight climbed to altitude carrying SpaceShipOne was tense although it was interspersed by interviews with VIPs. After separation and ignition the rocket exhaust of SpaceShipOne could be seen clearly and the vehicle was seen to climb with a high rate of acceleration; there was a real sensation of speed. After the long descent Mike Melville made what he described as a "descent landing". To the observers the flight apparently went off without a hitch but we found out at the post-fight press conference that a failure of the primary trim control system had been potentially serious and that Mike Melville had only just made it into space. The problem also contributed to him missing the 5 mile entry "box" around Mojave by 22 miles! Highlights for me, other than the flight itself of course, were being interviewed by a TV crew making a film for Burt Rutan and talking to Jim Oberg and Richard Branson.

The significance of SpaceShipOne is that it proves what space tourism advocates (including contributors to Spacefuture.com) have been saying for many years: there is no inherent reason why space travel should be expensive. What makes it expensive is not the difficulties of the technology but rather the fact that it is controlled by Government monopolies, namely the national space agencies. As in other areas of endeavour Government monopolies add cost and hamper technological development. In "How the West Wasn't Won" Patrick Collins compared the development of space travel to how America's West would have developed if westward expansion had been controlled by a Government agency. Recently I was at a space event attended by one of the members of the rock group Blur who had written the music Beagle II would have relayed if it had successfully landed on Mars. It struck me that another analogy could be made by looking at the British music industry. As it is Britain has one of the most dynamic music industries in the world which generates billions of pounds of value and creates thousands of jobs; it is an acknowledged world leader. Just imagine what the music charts would be like if every song had to be written by a Ministry of Music-licensed musician, or if you wanted to form a band you needed a Ministry licence. Somehow I don't think the Government would have created music superstars like David Bowie, Elton John, Rod Stewart, the Eurythmics, Blur or Oasis to name but a few!

The first space race was a race in the 1960s between two superpowers driven by geo-political considerations. It was great to watch but for most people was a spectator sport. We are now standing at the starting line of the second space race which will be a race between competing private sector organizations aiming to generate profit by providing space tourism. On the back of the cheap space access tourism requires humanity will open up the space frontier. This space race will be a participation sport.

Personally I have dreamt of travelling in space for forty years or more, and always wanted to be an astronaut. Being at school in the UK in the 1960s and 1970s this did not seem to be a viable career option, although I am glad to know that British born Michael Foale who is a few years older than me proved it could be done, and has made it as a highly successful NASA astronaut. He is only one of the thousands of my contemporaries who wanted to go to space. We are the generation who had our futures taken away from us by the slow pace of space developments held back by the Government monopolies. By the time Patrick Collins and David Ashford introduced me to the idea of space tourism back in 1990 I was dissatisfied with "traditional" space activities and realized that space tourism would be the only way I might ever get into space, if I was lucky and things developed apace. I thought I might just get lucky and live long enough to make it into sub-orbital space. Now, for me and thousands of others, Burt Rutan and SpaceShipOne have raised our hopes again and, I believe, made it realistic to believe that we will make it into space, not only sub-orbital but also orbital in our lifetimes. I can't wait to go, but in the mean time I am off to Russia to fly the Mig-25 and take the zero-G plane trip as the "next best things" to an actual space flight.
