Space Future has been on something of a hiatus of late. With the concept of Space Tourism steadily increasing in acceptance, and the advances of commercial space, much of our purpose could be said to be achieved. But this industry is still nascent, and there's much to do. So...watch this space.

In a recent piece entitled "Skeptics put Glenn, NASA under the microscope" about John Glenn's scheduled flight on the space shuttle, CNN quoted several medical researchers as saying that although Glenn is 77 his flight cannot be justified by medical research into aging. (Among other things, a single case is not statistically useful, and there is little data on his earlier short flight.) Politics and PR seem to be the real reasons behind the plan.

Initiative to "colonize" space proposed as alternative

It seems that space tourism is becoming a topic of interest in the mainstream press. A recent article in the Los Angeles Times 'Gearing Up for the New Race to Space' discusses the X-Prize and how it's competitors will soon allow anyone to fly into space:

In a recent press release, Gateway computers, a major PC maker, announced that they will be the exclusive supliers of computer workstations to Vela Technologies Development, Inc., who is developing the Space Cruiser(R) System (SCS) space tourist vehicle. This is the company working with Zegrahm Space Voyages to offer tourist flights into space.

Former ESA official says investment priorities are backward
Pierre Bartholome, former head of ESA's office in Belgium argued that commercial profits from space activities have been earned from satellite operation, ground equipment manufacturing, satellite manufacturing and rocket manufacturing, in that order.

ASCE starts planning "Space 2000"
Space 98, the biennial space conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers' Aerospace Division, is one of the few "mainstream" space conferences that is actively adapting to the "new paradigm" that space activities are becoming increasingly commercial, and their funding will come increasingly from the private sector with the objective of earning profits.
